In the picturesque town of Aylesbury, in Buckinghamshire, Tim Ibbotson embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability by integrating solar panels into his home. This case study outlines the motivations, challenges, and profound impacts of Tim’s transition to solar energy, offering insights into the practical and financial benefits of embracing renewable resources.

Journey to Solar Energy

Q: What motivated you to install solar panels at your home?

“My background is in ecology and environmental science, which naturally influences my decisions. It feels good to contribute, even in a small way, to environmental sustainability.” says Tim.

Motivated by the desire to contribute to environmental efforts while enjoying the perk of reduced energy bills. Cost was the primary concern for Tim, a challenge he navigated by focusing on the long-term benefits of solar panels as an investment in sustainability and financial savings.

Q: How did you first learn about the Solar Together scheme?

A: "Extensive research and consideration led to choosing the Solar Together scheme for its affordability and reduced risk."

Installation Overview

Solar Together installation in aylesbury
10 panels installed on an east-facing roof for maximum sunlight exposure.

The project included:

  • 10 Solar Panels:  Optimally positioned to capture maximum sunlight.
  • Battery Storage Capacity: 6.5 kWh to store surplus solar energy.

The addition of battery storage enabled Tim to use generated electricity efficiently, reducing reliance on grid-supplied power.

Tim commend the efficient and seamless installation process, noting the professionalism of the installers.

Q: How was the installation process for you?

A: ““It was really easy. The process came together smoothly from the start, and the installers were very professional, even working through snow without any issues.” - Tim Ibbotson

The installation process was marked by excellence, from survey to system activation. Tim found the procedure straightforward, thanks to the professionalism of the installers and the seamless coordination provided by Solar Together.

The professionalism of the installers and the seamless coordination by the Solar Together scheme made the installation process straightforward. “The installers were tidy and professional, clearing up after themselves. Even the scaffold company was punctual and efficient.”

“If they told you they were coming that day, they were there without problems.”

Impact

Post-installation, Tim witnessed notable reductions in his energy bills and an increase in disposable income, validating his investment in solar technology. The ability to charge an electric vehicle “with free fuel” and the added financial returns from selling surplus energy back to the grid further underscored the value of his solar setup.

  • Annual Electricity Consumption: Estimated at 2,500 kWh.
  • Estimated electricity generation from solar PV system: An impressive 2900 kWh of electricity generated by the panels.
  • Grid electricity independence / Self-sufficiency (PV Only):  Reduced to 1500 kWh annually.
  • Annual Savings:  £405 predicted savings in the first year alone. Ability to sell back surplus energy, earning £167.

“We’ve got the electric car, so we can charge the car off the solar energy, and we’re paying so little on a daily basis.” says Tim.

Q: What are your thoughts on the costs of solar panels ?

A: “Although there was an upfront cost for the panels, the investment has paid off. We no longer pay for electricity; instead, we often sell back to the grid, which makes the decision even more rewarding.” says Tim.

Q: Can you share any changes you’ve made around energy efficiency?

A: “I run the washing machine and dishwasher during the day. Because of course the sun is out, so I've got free electricity.”

Q: How has your solar panels allowed for your energy independence?

A: “If it’s sunny, we don’t actually pay anything. We sell to the grid more than we use. With the battery, we are self-sufficient at night during the summer because the battery is always full.”
